The 2026 Tax-Free Weekend Advertising Calendar
Seventeen states run back-to-school sales tax holidays in 2026. These windows compress purchase intent into bookable, deadline-driven flights — the single best programmatic-guaranteed DOOH product of the season. Sortable table below, then the three-move playbook for trading each window.

| State | Dates | Days | Exempt | Caps | Advertiser angle |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Mississippi MS · South | Jul 10–12 | 3d | Clothing & footwear | ≤ $100 per item | Earliest window of the season. Own the corridor before any other state opens. |
Alabama AL · South | Jul 17–19 | 3d | Clothing, computers, school supplies, books | Clothing ≤ $100, computers ≤ $750, books ≤ $30 | Broad category mix — retail-adjacent + big-box parking-lot panels perform. |
Florida FL · South | Jul 20 – Aug 20 | 32d | Clothing, school supplies, learning aids, computers | Clothing ≤ $100, supplies ≤ $50, learning aids ≤ $30, computers ≤ $1,500 | The marquee window. A full month = sustained flight, not a weekend sprint. Two-wave creative required. |
Tennessee TN · South | Jul 31 – Aug 2 | 3d | Clothing, computers, school supplies | Clothing ≤ $100, computers ≤ $1,500, supplies ≤ $100 | Nashville/Memphis DMA lock-in. Highway boards to mall clusters. |
Arkansas AR · South | Aug 1–2 | 2d | Clothing, school supplies, art supplies, electronic devices | Clothing ≤ $100, accessories ≤ $50 | Little Rock + NW Arkansas. Grocery + gas panels dominate mid-state. |
Missouri MO · Midwest | Aug 1–3 (first weekend) | 3d | Clothing, computers, school supplies | Clothing ≤ $100, computers ≤ $1,500, supplies ≤ $50 | Local option — many jurisdictions opt in. Kansas City + St. Louis worth the buy. |
Virginia VA · South | Aug 1–3 (first weekend) | 3d | Clothing, school supplies, emergency-prep, ENERGY STAR | Clothing ≤ $100, supplies ≤ $20 | NoVA + Richmond + Hampton Roads. Commuter transit + mall panels. |
New Mexico NM · West | Aug 1–3 | 3d | Clothing, computers, school supplies | Clothing ≤ $100, computers ≤ $1,000, supplies ≤ $30 | Albuquerque + Santa Fe. Small state, uncontested inventory during the window. |
Texas TX · South | Aug 7–9 | 3d | Clothing, footwear, backpacks, school supplies | ≤ $100 per item across all categories | Largest single-state BTS spend. DFW / Houston / Austin / SA all viable — book highway + grocery mid-July. |
Oklahoma OK · South | Aug 7–9 | 3d | Clothing & footwear | < $100 per item | OKC + Tulsa. Simple category — cleanest creative brief of the season. |
Ohio OH · Midwest | Aug 7–9 | 3d | Clothing, school supplies, instructional material (traditional 3-day) | Clothing ≤ $75, supplies ≤ $20 | The expanded 2024–25 Ohio holiday was repealed. 2026 reverts to the traditional 3-day BTS window. |
South Carolina SC · South | Aug 7–9 | 3d | Clothing, supplies, computers, bed & bath linens, hearing aids | No cap on most items | No price caps = high-ticket categories (laptops, mattresses) actually move. Charleston/Greenville. |
Iowa IA · Midwest | Aug 7–8 (Fri–Sat) | 2d | Clothing & footwear | < $100 per item | Two days only — the tightest, most deadline-driven window on the calendar. |
Illinois IL · Midwest | Aug 7–16 | 10d | Clothing, footwear, school supplies (REDUCED state rate — not fully tax-free) | State portion drops from 6.25% → 1.25%; local tax still applies | Half-holiday. Position creative as 'save more' not 'tax-free.' Chicagoland dominates. |
Massachusetts MA · Northeast | Aug 8–9 | 2d | Most retail items (not just BTS) | ≤ $2,500 per item | The broadest holiday in the country. Not BTS-specific — every retailer buys DOOH the week before. |
Maryland MD · South | Aug 9–15 (Shop Maryland Week) | 7d | Clothing, footwear, backpacks (first $40) | ≤ $100 per item | Full week = mid-window creative refresh worth budgeting for. Baltimore + DC suburbs. |
Connecticut CT · Northeast | Aug 16–22 | 7d | Clothing & footwear, backpacks, cleated shoes | < $300 per item (highest cap in the Northeast) | Runs after most others close = uncontested budget. Hartford/New Haven, plus NYC-DMA spillover. |
No holiday, still bookable
California, New York, Georgia, North Carolina, Colorado, Washington, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and most other large states do not run a 2026 back-to-school tax holiday. Route those markets to deal-week and peak-crunch packages (Prime Day, Walmart Deals, Target Circle Week) instead of the tax-holiday flight.
Non-holiday markets referenced: California · New York · Georgia · North Carolina · Colorado · Washington · Pennsylvania · Michigan · Wisconsin · Minnesota · Arizona · Nevada · Oregon

How to trade a tax-free window
Countdown, T-10 to T-1
Static bulletins and programmatic panels run countdown creative 7–10 days before the window opens. Category-first — 'TAX-FREE STARTS FRIDAY, LAPTOPS UNDER $1,500' — not brand-first. Book highway + mall + grocery panels in that DMA.
Live swap, day 1
Dynamic creative swaps to 'TAX FREE NOW' the morning the window opens. On programmatic DOOH this is a near-real-time push; on direct-buy static, the poster is up. Add the retailer's short URL — never a QR code (a phone can't scan a fly-by screen).
Last-day urgency
The final 24–36 hours carry the strongest response rate. 'LAST DAY. TAX-FREE ENDS AT MIDNIGHT.' Concentrate impressions to evening dayparts and weekend afternoons; drop midday delivery to fund the closer.
Note: dynamic creative swaps on DOOH complete in seconds to minutes across programmatic supply, versus days to weeks for printed static assets. That's why tax-free windows are a natural DOOH product — the deadline moves the message.
The marquee window
Florida: July 20 – August 20
Florida's 32-day sales tax holiday is not a weekend sprint — it's a sustained flight that spans four weekends and the peak-crunch first two weeks of August. Plan it in two waves.
Opening burst
Category creative (clothing, supplies, computers) with 'TAX FREE NOW — FL' identifier. Miami, Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville DMAs. Highway + mall + grocery. Steady daily impressions, no daypart compression.
Peak-crunch refresh
Creative refresh with urgency framing ('11 DAYS LEFT'). Layer college move-in geo overlay for Gainesville, Tallahassee, Coral Gables. Add evening + weekend daypart weight. Last three days, heavy-up spend by ~35% for the closer.
How this trades in practice
Three hypothetical flights, built from real windows
The three examples below are illustrative — not past campaigns. They show how a media planner could assemble a flight using only mechanics we actually offer: real state windows in the table above, real venue types from our inventory, and the standard countdown → live-swap → last-day creative pattern.
Aug 7–9 statewide, DFW + Houston + Austin + San Antonio
Book highway digital + mall interior + gas-station TV in the four major Texas DMAs starting Jul 28. Countdown creative (T-10 → T-1). Live-swap to 'TAX FREE NOW — under $100' the morning of Aug 7. Weekend-afternoon daypart concentration; last-day urgency asset Sun evening.
Jul 20 – Aug 20, two-wave flight
Florida's 32-day window supports the computers-under-$1,500 category cleanly. Wave 1 (Jul 20 – Aug 3): steady highway + mall in Miami/Orlando/Tampa/Jax. Wave 2 (Aug 4–20): creative refresh + college move-in geo overlay for Gainesville and Tallahassee; last-3-day heavy-up on evening dayparts.
Aug 16–22, uncontested closer
Connecticut's Aug 16–22 window opens after most others close. A retailer with stores across Hartford/New Haven + Westchester County can book statewide CT plus NYC-DMA spillover, taking a week of undivided BTS share-of-voice while other advertisers have gone dark. Cap ≤ $300 per item is the highest in the Northeast.
All three are planning examples for illustration. Ask for a costed brief and we'll build the real flight.
