Football fans · College football 2026-27
College football is 266 separate audiences, each with its own town, its own rivalry and its own Saturday. Division I athletics are in 98 of the top 100 DMAs, compared with 42 markets that have pro teams. The fans travel about 991 miles a year to games and over-index on income. Goldfish has screens inside two miles of every FBS stadium and in the blocks where college football matters most.

Miles college fans travel a year to games (2025). 57% stay overnight, 81% run on caffeine, and they're up at 7:42am (7:06am for SEC and Big Ten)
Talker Research / Holiday Inn Express, 2025
Goldfish: 44,934 roadside and highway boards and 178,845 gas placements. Some suburban stadium rings are thin (Arrowhead 116, Gillette 166, Highmark 293), so the corridors do the work. We'll tell you when that's the case.

FBS
Realignment verified July 1, 2026, so your plan doesn’t still have the old Pac-12 in it. New for 2026: a rebuilt Pac-12 (Oregon State, Washington State, Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, Utah State, Texas State). The Mountain West adds UTEP, Northern Illinois and North Dakota State (up from FCS). Sacramento State joins the MAC and Louisiana Tech moves to the Sun Belt. Northwestern opens its new stadium Oct 2, and UCLA stays at the Rose Bowl.

On campus
The school’s rights holder sells what’s inside the gates. The 75,000+ screens within two miles of FBS stadiums are a different story.
Most FBS programs sell stadium signage, videoboards, radio, athletics websites and official-partner status through a multimedia-rights (MMR) company, and more mid-majors are taking it in-house. Those deals carry in-venue category exclusivity. Goldfish doesn’t sell that. We sell the screens within two miles of FBS stadiums, plus the bars, grocery, gas and highways across every college market. Non-sponsors reach the same fans without marks. Official partners can extend licensed creative off campus with rights-holder approval.
Why now: schools now pay athletes directly, and the per-school cap rises about 4% a year. Athletic departments are selling jersey patches (allowed from Aug 1, 2026: up to two 4-sq-in patches), naming rights and re-bid MMR deals, and they need sponsor value they can prove. A DOOH extension with proof-of-play reporting per tactic is easy for an MMR sales team to add to a package.
Brands that just bought patches and stadium names have already shown the category works. Financial services make up about 30% of patch deals and energy about 20%, alongside credit unions, banks, health systems, restaurants and food brands. Most of them are under-invested off campus.
Only game in town
Nielsen: “The top of the Index is dominated by mid-size markets near flagship programs, where few competing professional sports franchises exist to split local attention.”

Why blocks matter: Athens sits inside the Atlanta DMA, and Oxford sits inside the Memphis DMA. Buy those markets by DMA and you’ve mostly bought Atlanta and Memphis. Buy them by census block and you get the college towns.
Audiences
Three crowds share one stadium. They need different screens, and one of them can’t legally see your beer ad.
| Segment | Who (sourced) | Screens | Fits | Never |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Students | Mostly under 21. Campus audiences fail the 73.6% (beer, betting) and 73.8% (spirits) adult thresholds. | Campus (5,932 placements), off-campus apartments, QSR and gyms within 1 mi | Telecom, banks/credit unions, QSR, rideshare, gaming, apparel, employers | Alcohol, sportsbooks, prediction markets |
| Alumni & traveling fans | 42% undergrad / 25% postgrad degrees; top-income bracket 19% vs 6% nationally; 57% stay overnight; ~991 miles a year | Airports, interstates, hotels, ring bars, alumni-metro bars | Auto, financial, travel/hotels, premium beverages, insurance | n/a |
| Locals | Oxford grows from ~28K to 200K+ on game weekends; Michigan: 100,496 hotel room-nights a season | Grocery, gas, c-store, pharmacy, roadside across the DMA | Grocery, QSR, health systems, credit unions, home services, auto dealers | n/a |
Lodging signal: vacation-rental demand in college towns jumped as much as +375% (Columbus) and +275% (Tuscaloosa) for marquee 2025 home games. Weeks 6 and 8 were the busiest rental weekends (Vrbo Gridiron Guest Report). Run lodging creative in the visiting team’s DMA 2-3 weeks out (play 58).
Women and emerging fans: industry fan research puts college fans at 45% female. Nearly 400 colleges now field women’s flag football (130+ varsity), and the NCAA added it to its Emerging Sports for Women program in Jan 2026, with a championship targeted for spring 2028.
FAQ
Not without a license. Conference, NCAA and playoff marks are actively enforced, and courts have held that a school’s color scheme plus city and football cues can infringe even with no logo (LSU v. Smack Apparel, 5th Cir. 2008). We write “Saturday,” “gameday,” “rivalry weekend” and city names, in your brand colors or ours.
Great for students, off-limits for alcohol and betting. Alcohol codes require 73.6% (beer), 73.7% (wine) and 73.8% (spirits) of the audience to be 21+, which rules out most campus screens, and the AGA code bans sportsbook ads on campuses. We exclude them automatically.
NIL deals cover the athlete’s own name, image and likeness, not the school’s uniform or marks. Sportsbooks can’t do NIL deals with college athletes.
We hold a flex reserve and move it into the host market as soon as each show announces, usually the Sunday or Monday before. FOX and ESPN announce separately, so we watch both.
Yes, if your agreement covers out-of-home and the rights holder approves the creative. We run the licensed version in that school’s DMA and alumni metros, and the generic version everywhere else.
